History and tradition beckon for Sunday with the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500. While open wheel Indy Car racing has dropped like a rock in popularity the Indy 500 remains a crown jewel. Much like horse racing’s Kentucky Derby the Indianapolis 500 is appointment viewing for millions of fans and gamblers that otherwise would not watch any other race. Simon Pagenaud opened as the top rated sportsbooks favorite for “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Pagenaud is on the front row which has boosted his gambling appeal. Other top choices will be Alexander Rossi, Joseph Newgarden and last year’s winner Will Power.

Indy 500 Overview
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is held at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Track was opened in 1909 and seats over 257,000 fans. The configuration is a rectangular oval that is 2.5 miles in length with very moderate turn banks of nine degrees. Will Power was the Offshore sportsbooks payout winner last year. There has not been a repeat winner of this event since Helio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002. Castroneves ranks best among active drivers with three Indy 500 wins for his career.
Simon Pagenaud
Simon Pagenaud will be on the front row and is coming off a career best sixth place finish in last year’s Indy 500. Pagenaud is fourth in the Indy Car standings so far for the 2019 season and is coming off a win in the Indy Grand Prix last time out.
Ed Carpenter
Also, on the front row for the Indy 500 is Ed Carpenter. What is interesting about Carpenter is that he has been a part time driver since 2014. He has not run a single race this season. Last year Carpenter finished second at the Indy 500 which was the best run of his career.
Spencer Pigot
Completing the front row is Spencer Pigot, who is not having a great overall season with a current standing of 14th place on the Indy Car board. Pigot has had bad luck at the Indy 500 with a career best finish of 18th in 2007. Last year he finished in 20th place.
Will Power
Last year’s champion was Will Power, who posted his first Indy 500 win for his career. As a Team Penske driver, you can be assured Power will have the very best in equipment and support. Power will start on the second row with Ed Jones and rookie Colton Herta. So far this year Power has been inconsistent and is sixth in the Indy Car standings.
Josef Newgarden
Joseph Newgarden will start in the middle of row three and is the current leader of the Indy Car standings. Newgarden is still in search of the first Indy Car win of his career. His best finish was third place in 2016 and he finished eighth last year.
Alexander Rossi
So far this year Alexander Rossi is in third place in the Indy Car standings. He posted an Online sportsbooks win at the Long Beach Grand Prix earlier this season. He will start on the third row for the Indy 500. Rossi has tasted the sweet bottle of victory milk at Indy with a win in the 2016 race.

Parity is the name of the game at the Indy 500. There simply is no dominant driver in the circuit or one that owns this track. Beyond that the race has become a real crap shoot in recent years with wild variables going into the win. Joseph Newgarden brings Team Penske credentials and a consistent record this year.
