Favorite

Webb Simpson 10-1

I don’t like playing favorites, but it is really hard to argue with taking Simpson this week. He has never won this event, but he has been in contention a lot. He lost in a playoff last year to Tyler Duncan and two years ago he finished third. He also lost a playoff in 2011 and finished in the top 10 in 2013. I normally don’t back favorites, but I think you have to seriously consider Simpson this week.

Value Plays

Sungjae Im 20-1

If it seems like you see Im playing every week, you do. When watching the Masters it was mentioned that Im simply lives out of a suitcase and plays every event. And he is playing well. He was very much in contention last week and his game is so good and his temperament so even that I don’t think he will suffer a letdown this week. I think he could contend again this week and at 20-1 he is worth taking.

Tommy Fleetwood 20-1

I almost left Fleetwood out this week and then I noticed that this course is really similar to links courses in England. Fleetwood should feel very comfortable this week and this field is not that much better than what he would see in a good European Tour field. I will take him at 20-1.

Russell Henley 25-1

Henley has been solid this year with a lot of good finishes, including seven straight finishes inside the top 30. He has also played well in this event in the past with top 10 finishes in 2014, 2015 and 2016. You can definitely make a case for Henley winning and he is listed at 25-1.

Charles Howell III 60-1

Isn’t this just the type of tournament that Howell would win?  You see him near the top of leaderboards every now and then and it is usually in an event that has a weaker field than normal. It is also on a course where distance is not a necessity. That fits the bill for this week, as this course is a par 70 and is about 7,000 yards. I’ll take a flyer on Howell this week.

Sam Burns 75-1

Another player who is listed with longshot odds is Burns. He has played well of late, as he led after three rounds in Houston and he led at the midway point at the Safeway Open. If Burns can replicate what he did in Houston in Georgia then he has a chance to contend. He had excellent tee-to-green stats in Houston and I expect him to play well again in Georgia.
