Favorite
Abraham Ancer and Matthew Wolff 5-1
You should know by now that I almost never take favorites and I am not backing Ancer and Wolff this week. These two have the highest combined world ranking in the field but this is the first appearance in this event for Ancer and Wolff didn’t impress last year when he finished sixth. This team is definitely talented, but I can’t back them as the favorite.
Value Plays
Harris English and Matt Kuchar 8-1
The team of English and Kuchar won this event in 2013 and in 2016. English and Kuchar did not play this event in either of the last two years. Not only did they win in 2013 and in 2016, but they finished second in 2014 and 2015. They also hold the record of the largest margin of victory, which was seven strokes in 2013. Putting will be a huge key and this team ranks first in terms of putting over their last 24 rounds. English has the best rank in terms of putting on bermudagrass greens in his last 24 rounds. I think this team should be listed as the favorite and yet we get them at 8-1.
Billy Horschel and Brendon Todd 8-1
This team finished tied for 3rd last year. Horschel will be making his eighth consecutive appearance in this event. Horschel ranks near the top of the field in Strokes Gained: Putting in his last 24 rounds. He also ranks high in terms of putting on bermudagrass greens. Todd had not been playing up to his previous level of earlier in the year until last week. He seemed to find some good form in Mexico and I expect that form to continue over to this week.
Daniel Berger and Steve Stricker 11-1
I think there is some value in taking this team. Berger is definitely one of the best players in the field and Stricker is no slouch. He played well last week in Mexico so he is in fine form. Berger will be playing with his fourth different partner and Stricker knows how to win these types of events. He won the Shootout with Sean O’Hair in 2017 and Jerry Kelly in 2009. Double-digit odds on the team of Berger and Stricker definitely presents some value.
Fade
Cameron Champ and Tony Finau 6-1
I don’t understand the odds on Champ and Finau at all. This format doesn’t favor this team, as both Champ and Finau are long hitters. This course also doesn’t favor bombers and that is the strength of Champ. Teams that win events like this one are ones that have at least one of the two players who putt well. That is not the case with this team and I expect them to struggle.
