Another limited field event is being held this week on the PGA Tour, as the ZOZO Championship at Sherwood Oaks takes place in California. Many of the world’s top players will be in the field, including Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Tiger Woods. As for this writing, the status of World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is uncertain, as DJ tested positive for COVID-19 last week and had to withdraw from the CJ Cup. There is a chance Johnson could test negative this week and be included at Sherwood Oaks and if that is the case he will be listed as the betting favorite. Let’s look at the ZOZO Championship at Sherwood Oaks odds and picks.

Course: Sherwood Oaks

This course is a par 72 that measures 7,006 yards. It is a Jack Nicklaus designed course that hosted the Hero World Challenge from 2000-2013. The last time a PGA Tour event was held at Sherwood was in 2013 and it was Tiger winning in a playoff.

Defending Champion: Tiger Woods

Favorite

Jon Rahm 10-1

I don’t like backing favorites and in the case of Rahm, I was disappointed in this play last week. He finished in a tie for 17th at Shadow Creek. Perhaps he needed to shake off a little rust and there is reason to think he will do better this week, as four of his last five victories occurred after he played the previous week. Although I rarely take favorites, I would just kick myself if Rahm won this week and I didn’t play him to some extent at odds of 10-1.

Value Plays

Patrick Reed 22-1

In his past three starts, Reed has finished 3rd, 13th and 7th. He has played well on courses similar to Sherwood Oaks with two top ten finishes at Muirfield and a couple of second place finishes at Innisbrook. Reed always seems to play well in events where Tiger is featured and that is the case this week. I give Reed a good shot to contend and we get him at odds of 22-1.

Collin Morikawa 22-1

Morikawa grew up near Sherwood Oaks so he knows the area well and he should be comfortable this week. He played well last week and it is time to keep him in mind for a top finish in upcoming weeks. I think he has value at odds of 22-1.

Hideki Matsuyama 28-1

It would be really good for Matsuyama if he could win this week considering the sponsor of the event is ZOZO. There is no question that Matsuyama will be highly motivated this week and he definitely has the game to win at Sherwood Oaks. I will take a flyer on him at odds of 28-1.

Joaquin Niemann 35-1

Niemann has been going under the radar a bit with finishes of 13th and 6th in his last two events. He looked good last week and there is no reason he can’t contend this week. I’ll take him at big odds this week.

Matthew Fitzpatrick 35-1

It should be just a matter of time before Fitzpatrick gets his first PGA Tour win. He played well last week with a tie for 12th and if he gets hot with his putter he can contend this week.
