Are you ready for the Masters in the month of November? Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the PGA Tour golf schedule was thrown upside down and this year the Masters is in early November. That means we not only get great NFL and college football this weekend but we also get great golf. Favorite
Bryson DeChambeau 8-1
If you read this column on a weekly basis then you already know I almost never take favorites. A lot of people are talking about how the length of DeChambeau will overwhelm Augusta, but I am not sold. I know that DeChambeau has changed how some people are looking at length off the tee, but winning at Augusta is more about feel than it is about length. And keep in mind that in the last 10 years, no pre-tournament favorite has won the Masters. I am not taking DeChambeau this week.
Value Plays
Brooks Koepka 16-1
I have gone against Koepka a little bit over the past year, but he seems to be rounding into form at the right time. He had to get fully recovered after his surgery and I went against him before and after his surgery. It is now time to look at taking him again in major events. Koepka is a player who raises his game to the situation and there is no bigger situation than the Masters. I think Koepka has some value at these odds.
Patrick Cantlay 22-1
Cantlay finally got back into the winner’s circle, as he won the ZOZO Championship in October. He is now ranked in the Top 10 in the latest World Golf Rankings and his game is well suited for Augusta. There are a lot of young stars in golf today and Cantlay needs to take the next step to get into the mix with Thomas, DeChambeau, Morikawa, etc. I’ll take Cantlay at odds of 22-1.
Patrick Reed 28-1
I think Reed has the perfect game to win at Augusta and he has proven that in the past, as he is a Masters winner. Reed has played well this season and there is no reason he can’t contend again this week. We sometimes forget that Reed is still very young and his best golf could still be ahead of him. He already has a win this year and he is up to No. 11 in the world. I think his odds should be more in the range of 20-1 and we are getting 28-1.
Bubba Watson 28-1
I can’t ignore Bubba at these odds. He has proven that Augusta is perfect for his game with Masters wins in 2012 and 2014. Bubba comes in playing pretty well and I expect him to be in the mix this week. I will take him at these odds.
Matthew Wolff 35-1
I am going to go with one more player this week and that is Wolff. He has made his mark this season on the PGA Tour, as he finished second in the U.S. Open. Wolff is one of the young guns on the PGA Tour and he already has shown he can handle the pressure of the big stage. I think he has some value at these odds.
