It is Masters tuneup week on the PGA Tour, as the Houston Open gets underway on Thursday. This year is unlike any on the PGA Tour, as the Masters will be taking place in November and the Houston Open will serve as the prep. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is in the field this week along with a number of other top players. I am coming off a 3-3 week with the matchups at the Bermuda Championship. Let’s look at the matchups and picks for the Houston Open.

Golf Matchup Picks

Tony Finau +150 vs. Dustin Johnson

This is simply a price play, as I don’t think DJ should be this type of favorite. I know that Johnson was playing great before he got the virus, but he has been off for a while now and this tourney is simply a Masters prep for him. Finau has already dealt with coming back from the virus and he has six top 15 finishes in his last nine starts. I have to take a shot with Finau at this price.

Harold Varner III +105 vs. Jordan Spieth

When it comes to the matchups there is no question that one of the best things we have done over the past couple of years is go against Jordan Spieth. It doesn’t matter who he is going against, as we simply go against Spieth in every matchup on the board. I don’t think Varner is anything great, but this is simply a play against Spieth.

Cameron Davis -125 vs. Jordan Spieth

We do the same thing again in this matchup and lay the small price and take Davis in this matchup against Spieth.

James Hahn -125 vs. Charley Hoffman

I think Hahn is the clear choice in this matchup. He has three top 10 finishes in three starts this season. He is seventh on the PGA Tour in fairways hit and in GIR. Hoffman was awful last week in Bermuda and I don’t see him fixing things in a week’s time. I will take Hahn in this matchup.

Doc Redman -115 vs. Corey Conners

I am a little surprised that Redman is not more of a favorite in this matchup. Redman has finished tied for 3rd, tied for 3rd and tied for 4th in his last six starts. He is getting more comfortable at the top of leaderboards and it may not be long before he wins. I think he is a bargain price in this matchup against Conners.
