Favorite
Justin Thomas 6-1
If you want to back Thomas this week, I have no real argument, but I almost never back favorites unless it is an extreme situation. There is no question that Thomas could win this event, but 6-1 odds against a decent field seem short to me. I will be looking elsewhere.
Value Plays
Harris English 16-1
English has a win in this event and he finished in 5th place last year. He has said he loves the greens on this course and we know putting is always a huge key to winning. I give English a decent chance this week and although I would prefer odds of 20-1, I will still put him on the list.
Daniel Berger 20-1
We haven’t seen Berger since he finished in a tie for 17th at the Zozo Championship. He is still ranked as one of the top players in the world and he has a lot of good stats to back him this week. He does nearly everything well and on this course in Mexico we know that hitting second shots will be a big key. Driving distance is not the big thing this week, as it is hitting greens in regulation and Berger does that really well. I give Berger a big chance to contend this week and we get odds of 20-1.
Abraham Ancer 20-1
I know that Ortiz is the player who has a win already this year, but I think this course sets up better for Ancer than it does for Ortiz. This course gives the shorter hitters a much better chance than they would have on some other courses and Ancer is not one of the longer hitters. He thrives with his short game and he figures to do well this week. If he can get hot with the putter, I think he can contend for the win.
Charles Howell III 65-1
This would seem to be the type of place where Howell would do well, as distance off the tree is not a big factor. Howell has played well in this event in the past and it would be just like him to come up with a huge effort and win out of nowhere.
Harold Varner III 70-1
I will throw in one more big longshot and go with Varner. He is usually all or nothing. He missed cuts at the Bermuda Championship and the RSM Classic, but he finished in the Top 15 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and the Houston Open. He has played well in this event with a fifth and sixth-place finish in four tries. His Shots Gained on Approach numbers this season are good and that is a key stat to consider for this week.
