Bernd Wiesberger will look to defend his Italian Open title this week. Unlike last year when there were fans and a large prize pool, this year’s event will have no fans and the prize pool is much smaller. No top players are in the field this week, so the role of favorite goes to Matt Wallace. I went 3-2 with the matchups at the Scottish Championship last week. Let’s look at the matchups and picks for the Italian Open.

Italian Open Matchup Picks
Adri Arnaus -115 vs. Lorenzo Gagli
Arnaus played really well last year but he has struggled a bit this season. He looked better at Wentworth recently and we know he likes to play in Italy, as he won twice on the Alps Tour. The key this week will be the short game of Arnaus and I expect him to play well. I will take Arnaus in this matchup against Gagli.
Joachim B Hansen -115 vs. Marcus Armitage
Hansen has played well for the most part this season and his tee-to-green game is solid. He played well a year ago in the Italian Open and at the midway point he was in second place. I think his chances of playing well this week are high and I will take him in his matchup against Armitage.
Thorbjorn Olesen -130 vs. Chris Paisley
Olesen should be raring to go this week in Italy where he got his first win. He has also finished second twice in Italy, so his success in the country was not just a one- time fluke. The current form of Olesen is obviously a concern, but he did play well at Wentworth recently with a 27th place finish. I expect a very focused Olesen this week, so I will lay the price and take him in this matchup against Paisley.
Laurie Canter -160 vs. Marc Warren
Canter is a long hitter who should thrive this week in Italy. Canter has been a player to watch this year on the European Tour and I expect another good effort from him this week. I thought Warren would play better than he did a week ago, but he struggled and I see no reason to come back with him this week. I will take Canter in this matchup.
Wilco Nienaber -115 vs. Marcus Armitage
Nienaber has been playing well and he could be in the mix this week against a weaker field in Italy. He played well at Valderrama and on this long course his game should play well. Nienaber is a player to keep an eye on this season on the European Tour and I think he will have a good week in Italy. I will take him at the short price in this matchup against Armitage.
