The European Tour is holding a unique event this week with the Cyprus Showdown getting started on Thursday. The event will look normal for the first two rounds, but after Friday the field will be cut to 32 players and the scores reset. The top 16 players after Saturday will advance to Sunday and the scores will be reset again. I went 4-3 with the matchups at the Cyprus Open last week. Let’s look at the matchups and picks for the Cyprus Showdown.

Venue: Aphrodite Hills Resort, Paphos, Cyprus

This course is a par 71 that measures 6956 yards. It opened in 2002 and was renovated in 2017. The course should play pretty easy with wide fairways and large greens.

Cyprus Showdown Matchup Picks

Jason Scrivener -155 vs. Nicolas Colsaerts

You have to like how Scrivener finished last week, as he shot a 64 on Sunday and moved up to a tie for 6th. He ranks 14th on the European Tour in Shots Gained: Off the Tee and there is no reason he can’t have another good week in Cyprus. Colsaerts hits the ball a ton but he is still too inconsistent to back. I will take Scrivener in this matchup.

Wilco Nienaber -115 vs. Callum Shinkwin

I don’t know what happened to Nienaber in the third round last week as he blundered his way to a 79. He finished with a 64 to salvage something, and he should come into this week with confidence. He ranks first on the European Tour in driving distance and he proved with his 64 that he can make this course in Cyprus look really small. I also think that Shinkwin could have a massive letdown after winning last week, so I will take Nienaber in this matchup.

Marcus Armitage +105 vs. Paul Waring

You have to say that Armitage might be in the best form of his career, as he has finished in the top 23 in each of his last four events, including two top 10 finishes. He had a 64 in the second round last week so we know he likes this course. I think he is a bargain at this price against Waring.

Kalle Samooja -155 vs. Haotong Li

Samooja played really well last week while Li did not. I know that players can turn things around quickly, but you have to like what Samooja did and you can’t have any confidence in Li right now based on his current play. I will lay the price and take Samooja in this matchup.

Thorbjorn Olesen -115 vs. Gavin Green

I went against Green twice last week and was rewarded. I see no reason to change this week, so I will lay the small price and take Olesen in this matchup.
