The European Tour heads to Cyprus this week for the first time and the players will get two chances to pick up points in the Race to Dubai. This week it is the Cyprus Open, while next week it is the Cyprus Showdown. Andy Sullivan is listed as a solid favorite this week, as he is the only player listed with odds of less than 20-1. I went 2-3 with the matchups at the Italian Open last week. Let’s look at the matchups and picks for the Cyprus Open.
Venue: Aphrodite Hills Resort, Paphos, Cyprus
This course is a par 71 that measures 6956 yards. It opened in 2002 and was renovated in 2017. The course should play pretty easy with wide fairways and large greens.

Cyprus Open Matchup Picks
Andy Sullivan -140 vs. Thomas Detry
I am never high on backing favorites to win, but I have no problem taking them in the individual matchups. Sullivan is the clear favorite in this event and he is in top form. This is also a line move play, as the wiseguys are backing Sullivan in this matchup. Detry has been inconsistent throughout his career and I can’t see him thriving in Cyprus. I will take Sullivan in this matchup.
Sam Horsfield -115 vs. Gavin Green
Horsfield was rolling during the UK Swing but then he went to the U.S and ended up testing positive for COVID-19 and he has struggled since. He had last week off and I expect him to get back into form this week. I will take Horsfield in this matchup against Green.
Laurie Canter -115 vs. Gavin Green
I mentioned in the odds preview that I like Canter this week. He nearly won last week and I would not be surprised to see him come back and get the win in Cyprus. I will take him in this matchup against Green.
Antoine Rozner -115 vs. Garrick Higgo
Rozner played well in Italy with a top 10 finish. He has two top 10 finishes in his last four starts. He ranks 7th on the European Tour in Shots Gained: Approach. I will take him in this matchup against Higgo.
Sami Valimaki -115 vs. Matthew Jordan
Valimaki has three straight top 10 finishes and he ranks 5th on the European Tour in Shots Gained: Putting. He should thrive on this course and the wind shouldn’t be an issue for him. I will take Valimaki in this matchup.
Connor Syme -115 vs. Wil Besseling
Syme played well at Valderrama in the win with an 8th place finish. He ranks 8th on the European Tour in driving accuracy and in GIR. If he can get the putter going he could contend this week. I will take him in this matchup against Besseling.
Jorge Campillo -115 vs. David Horsey
Campillo is capable of winning this event and he proved not long ago that he can be consistent, as he had four straight top 20 finishes. Three of those finishes were in the top 10. He has solid overall statistics on the European Tour and he is capable of a big week. I will take him in this matchup against Horsey.
