The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make history next Sunday. Kansas City will try to become the first team ever to win three straight Super Bowls when the Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. These teams met in Super Bowl LVII two years ago with Kansas City rallying from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Philadelphia 38-35 thanks to a last second Harrison Butker field goal. Philadelphia was favored by a point in that game per the NFL betting odds, but Kansas City is favored by 1.5 points this time as no one wants to bet against three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.

Super Bowl LIX Betting Line

Kansas City Chiefs -1.5 vs. Philadelphia Eagles Total 49

There has been no movement on either the side or the total since the Super Bowl betting odds were released last Sunday. Kansas City would certainly be an underdog with its current resume if it were any other team, but the Chiefs are receiving a lot of credit after making seven straight AFC Championship Games and winning three of the last five Super Bowls. Philadelphia is hoping to upset Kansas City to win its second Super Bowl, but most prognosticators are picking Kansas City even though this game is a relative tossup.

Reasons to bet on Kansas City

Patrick Mahomes is the main reason why people are betting on the Chiefs in this game. It’s incredible to think that Tom Brady might be eclipsed so soon, but Mahomes has been incredible during his eight years in the NFL. He has led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game in each of his seven seasons as a starter, and he has been named the Super Bowl MVP for each of Kansas City’s three Lombardi Trophies.

Mahomes has not been as great as you might think in the Super Bowl though. He has completed 65.2% of his passes for 6.5 YPA with seven touchdowns and five interceptions in four games. The only time his quarterback rating was over 100 was in the Super Bowl win over Philadelphia two years ago, and he has been a bit more mistake prone than usual at this stage.

The other main reason to bet on the Chiefs is because of their defense. Steve Spagnuolo has done an incredible job with this team, as Kansas City allowed just 19.4 PPG to rank fourth in the league in scoring defense. Chris Jones was named a First Team All-Pro selection for the third straight season, and Trent McDuffie was an All-Pro pick for the second straight year. George Karlaftis has made a name for himself as an edge rusher too despite many doubting his ability to perform at the next level after a great career at Purdue.

Reasons to bet on Philadelphia

The Philadelphia run game has been fantastic throughout the season. Saquon Barkley joined the 2,000-yard club during the regular season, and he has been even better in the postseason. In the Eagles’ three playoff games, Barkley has carried the ball 66 times for 442 yards and five touchdowns. Barkley averaged at least 4.3 YPC in all but two games during the season, and those were against Pittsburgh and Cleveland who each have stars along the defensive line.

Philly’s offensive line has played a big role in Barkley’s success. Offensive tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson are considered two of the best in the business, and guards Landon Dickerson and Mekhi Becton are very good too. That has made the ‘Tush Push’ or ‘Brotherly Shove’ the most effective short yardage play we have seen in recent history.

An insanely talented defense is the other reason to back Philadelphia in this game. The Eagles have done an incredible job loading up on this side of the ball, especially in the draft. Quinyon Mitchell is one of the contenders to for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and fellow rookie Cooper DeJean has been great. Georgia standouts Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith Jr., and the injured Nakobe Dean have also played big roles for this squad, and Patrick Mahomes won’t find it easy to make things happen here.
