It’s the end of the road for Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has had a disastrous 2024 campaign with a 3-6 record heading into their Sunday Night Football game against the Houston Texans. The Cowboys have not only failed to win a home game to this point, but they have also been outscored by 94 points in their four games in the Metroplex. McCarthy could be fired at any moment with Dak Prescott sidelined for the rest of the season, and this offense was absolutely dreadful in its first game with someone other than the team’s franchise quarterback under center.

The Houston Texans were favored by 6.5 points when the initial NFL betting line came out for this game. The spread has since crossed Houston -7 as Dallas’ offensive performance has resonated over the course of the week. There hasn’t been as much movement on the total, but it has inched downwards.
Houston Texans Overview
We’ll learn a lot about Houston when we see how the Texans bounce back following last week’s heartbreaking loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football. Houston led Detroit 23-7 at halftime and was the beneficiary of five Jared Goff interceptions, but the Texans failed to score in the second half and ended up losing 26-23.
C.J. Stroud has been rather pedestrian over his last four games. Stroud has completed just 65 of 121 passes for 794 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while being sacked 18 times. Houston is 1-3 in those games, but the good news is that the Texans will likely have Nico Collins back in the lineup. Collins is the best receiver on the roster with a bullet, and his return after missing the last month with a hamstring injury would be a welcome sight for Stroud. That would allow Tank Dell to move into a more complimentary role.
Detroit really shut down Joe Mixon last week. Mixon carried the ball 25 times for just 46 yards and a touchdown. He had run for at least 100 yards in four straight games prior to that woeful performance against the Lions.
The Texans are allowing just 4.9 yards per play. However, they are dealing with a lot of injuries on this side of the ball. Mario Edwards Jr. is still out, and six starters are listed as questionable to play including star defensive end Will Anderson Jr. That’s something to keep an eye on closer to kickoff.
Dallas Cowboys Overview
Dallas is in total disarray. The Cowboys have the second-worst point differential in the NFC next to Carolina, and they have lost four straight games. There will be some major changes in the offseason given Jerry Jones’ desire to win another Super Bowl in his twilight years.
Cooper Rush might have an incredibly short leash. The long-time backup quarterback is still listed as the starter with Dak Prescott injured, but he was dreadful against Philadelphia last week. Rush completed just 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards, while Trey Lance gave the Cowboys a little more of a spark.
The Cowboys’ ground game has been awful too. Ezekiel Elliott is clearly a shell of himself and is averaging just 3.2 YPC with a long of 11 yards on 54 carries, but Rico Dowdle has looked a little better in recent weeks. That would be a huge help to Rush as the Cowboys rank in the bottom five in every rushing category.
This defense has been atrocious considering how much money has been spent on Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs. Dallas is allowing 28.8 PPG, and the secondary is surrendering a whopping 8.4 YPA. It could be much worse too, but opponents are calling off the dogs relatively earlier given how inept Dallas has been in all phases recently.
Monday Night Football Prediction
This game will be closer than the experts think, but the best bet is the Under. Dallas won’t be able to move the ball well in spite of Houston’s injury woes, while the Texans have not been good on this side of the ball in over a month.
Final Score: Houston 20, Dallas 14
