Once again, the Western Conference playoff race is far more intriguing than what is going on in the Eastern Conference. There are currently 11 teams that are .500 or better in the West as of Monday, February 10, while just seven teams have won at least half their games in the East. That competitiveness has the Golden State Warriors outside the playoffs entirely at this point despite being 26-26. It could spell trouble for the Dallas Mavericks too if new addition Anthony Davis misses any more time due to injury, as the Mavs are currently treading water at 28-25.

This will be the penultimate game for both Golden State and Dallas prior to the All-Star break. Golden State will play Dallas and Houston in Texas on back-to-back nights, while Dallas will host Golden State and Miami before having a few days off to enjoy All-Star weekend.
We’ve already seen the Mavericks and Warriors meet twice this season with the teams splitting their two meetings in San Francisco. Steph Curry outshined the recently departed Luka Doncic in their first meeting back in November, but Doncic was phenomenal in the second game between these Western Conference foes. He secured a triple-double with 45 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists on 16 of 23 shooting, and no one on the Warriors could keep up with that prolific stat line.

These next few weeks are pivotal in determining Dallas’ hopes to win the West. The Mavericks desperately need Kyrie Irving to be the player he was alongside Doncic, as the Anthony Davis trade might go down as the worst move in NBA history. Davis was dominant in the Mavericks’ 116-105 win over Houston with 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks, but he left the game late in the fourth quarter. It was reported on Sunday night that Davis had injured his groin and would be out for up to a month. The injury will certainly draw more ire from Mavericks’ fans, as the news that Dallas dealt Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for soon-to-be 32-year-old Anthony Davis did not go over well.
Additionally, Kyrie Irving will turn 33 next month, and there are concerns about his durability considering the minutes he has been logging in recent weeks. Irving was on the court for 40 minutes or more in each of Dallas’ last three games, and he is on record saying that he is still grieving the absence of Doncic.
Meanwhile, Golden State decided to swing for the fences at the trade deadline. The Warriors were at a crossroads given the team’s cap situation, but they decided to try to stay competitive for as long as possible with Steph Curry and Draymond Green as the team’s two aging stars. They tried to acquire Kevin Durant from Phoenix, but after Durant let it be known that he was not interested in rejoining the Warriors, Golden State did what many expected and traded for the perpetually disgruntled Jimmy Butler.
There’s no denying that Butler is talented, but his antics have frustrated several teams at this point. Golden State is hoping that Curry and Green can be steadying forces, and there is reason to believe this will work in the short term for the Warriors. Butler led the Miami Heat to the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023 with some yeoman performances before running out of gas.
Of course, Golden State has just a two or three year window after the trade. Butler is 35 and will turn 36 before the start of next season. Curry will turn 37 in March, and Green will turn 35 next month. That’s a trio of aging superstars surrounded by a ton of young or underperforming players.
Butler was solid in his Golden State debut, finishing with 25 points while making 7 of 12 field goals. As long as the Warriors’ three stars can stay healthy, this is a team to back over the next few weeks because Butler will be extra motivated to prove Pat Riley and Miami wrong.
