All eyes will be on Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night when the New York Knicks host the Denver Nuggets in the first game of an NBA doubleheader on ESPN. The Nuggets have the most dominant player in the league today with three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. The big man from Serbia will likely go down as the best international player in NBA history, and he is looking to win his fourth league MVP award in the past five seasons. Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are seen as the only two contenders for the honor this year, as everyone else is at least 50-1 to be named 2024-25 NBA MVP. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks have the third-best record in the Eastern Conference and will be one of the favorites to win it all provided the starting five can stay healthy.

The Knicks had arguably their best offensive performance of the season when these teams met in the Mile High City back in November. O.G. Anunoby registered the first 40-point game of his career as the Knicks walloped the Nuggets 145-118. New York shot 60.9% from the field and hit 52.8% of its threes on a night where the visitors had a whopping 45 assists compared to just 23 assists from Denver.

Denver was shredded by Minnesota on Saturday afternoon. The Timberwolves shot 55.8% from the field and 46.7% from beyond the arc in a 133-104 throttling of the Nuggets. Jokic was not at his best with only three rebounds and seven turnovers, while Anthony Edwards finished with 34 points and nine assists.

As always, Jokic is the key to everything for the Nuggets. He could make history as just the third player ever to finish with a 30-10-10 stat line, and he is far more efficient than Russell Westbrook was during his MVP season with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Jokic is averaging 29.9 PPG, 13.1 RPG, and 10.1 APG while making 56.7% of his field goals and 47.9% of his three-point attempts.

Jamal Murray is starting to look like his former self, and that’s good news if the Nuggets are ever going to contend for a title again. Aaron Gordon has not looked sharp recently with a nagging calf injury that is bothering him, and the decision to give Michael Porter Jr. a sizeable extension is beginning to look like a mistake. Fortunately, the well-traveled Westbrook has been able to give the team a spark, even if his turnover numbers are a bit high.

New York’s front office took a pretty big risk when the Knicks traded for Karl-Anthony Towns in the offseason. Towns is a great shooter and a dangerous offensive weapon, but there were real concerns about how he would mix with head coach Tom Thibodeau’s defense-first approach. Thus far, the former No. 1 overall pick has fit in well by averaging 24.9 PPG and 13.9 RPG while making 54% of his field goals and 43.1% of his threes.

There are two big concerns with the Knicks now that we are past the halfway point of the season. The first has to do with team fatigue. Thibodeau is famous for running his starters into the ground over the course of the year, and all five starters for the Knicks are averaging at least 34.7 MPG. Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and OG Anunoby currently rank 1-2-3 in the NBA in total minutes played, and Jalen Brunson is right behind them at No. 5. That leads into the second big issue with Thibodeau as teams tend to tune him out or grow resentful of his coaching style a few years in. Brunson’s leadership and mentality has kept that from happening in the Big Apple so far, but we saw things blow up spectacularly in both Chicago and Minnesota.

This is a dream season for the Knicks at this point. They currently have the third-best odds to win the East behind Boston and Cleveland, and they are on a three-game winning streak prior to Monday night’s game against Memphis. However, this team is just 6-6 in its last 12 games, and I do think some of the wear and tear will begin to bother them prior to the All-Star Break.
