The Dallas Mavericks stunned the entire league last weekend with the most shocking trade in modern memory. No one was reporting that Luka Doncic was on the trading block until it emerged that Dallas GM Nico Harrison was shipping him to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick in 2029. It’s a frighteningly low haul for the Mavericks given that Doncic is a generational talent entering his prime, and both Dallas fans and observers across the league are perplexed as to why he was traded for so little. The new-look Mavericks lost by 43 points to the Cleveland Cavaliers in their first game after the trade, but we will start to see how competitive they are this week when they face the defending champion Boston Celtics.

Dallas didn’t have Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic, or Anthony Davis on the floor for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and they were record-breakingly bad on defense in the first half. Cleveland scored 50 points in the first quarter for the first time in franchise history, and the Cavaliers also set records for first-half points (91) and biggest halftime lead (45 points). That led to both teams emptying their benches pretty early, so Dallas starters Spencer Dinwiddie, Dante Exum, and Klay Thompson all should be well-rested.

Boston is currently the second-best team in the Eastern Conference with a 35-15 record prior to Tuesday night’s game against Cleveland. The Celtics are just 10-6 against Western Conference teams, but they comfortably beat the Mavericks on the road less than two weeks ago. All five starters for Boston had at least 17 points, while Dallas wasn’t great from the floor. Irving had a solid game with 22 points on 11 of 23 shooting, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Celtics.

Boston Celtics vs. Dallas Mavericks SGP

Jayson Tatum continues to be one of the most underrated players in the NBA. Although he led Boston to an NBA championship last season, he is not spoken in the same rarified air as guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, or even Joel Embiid. Tatum is an extremely reliable player that can give you great production on almost every single night though. He is averaging 26.9 PPG, 8.9 RPG, and 5.7 APG to lead the Celtics in all three categories, and he also ranks first on the team in steals.

Meanwhile, it looks like NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown may have taken a step back. Brown is averaging 23.3 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 4.8 APG, but he is turning the ball over a bit much and he is only hitting 32.1% of his threes. That’s worse than anyone else currently in the starting rotation for the Celtics. Fortunately, Kristaps Porzingis continues to stay healthy and is a terrifying talent on offense.

The Mavericks are expected to be much better defensively with the addition of Anthony Davis. That gives Dallas some talented big men that can challenge shooters in the paint, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out on offense.

Kyrie Irving is likely going to be the leading scorer for the Mavericks going forward. Irving is currently averaging 24.3 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 4.8 APG for Dallas, and he is making 47.9% of his field goals and 41.5% of his threes. His teammates love playing with him, so the front office is hoping that Irving doesn’t revert to the mercurial talent that he was in Brooklyn.

It looks like Anthony Davis will make his Dallas debut against Boston on Thursday night. Davis is currently dealing with an ab strain that will keep him out of Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia, but I expect him to have a great game if he is healthy. He has always played well against the Celtics and is averaging 25.7 PPG, 11.9 RPG, and 3.4 APG while making 52.8% of his field goals. Davis was great in a win versus the Celtics just two weeks ago when he was still with the Los Angeles Lakers, and he has historically put up big numbers against Boston.
