It’s crazy to think that the Philadelphia 76ers might miss out on the postseason entirely after signing Paul George this offseason. Philadelphia has made the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons after tactically tanking under former general manager Sam Hinkie. There were high hopes after adding George to a roster that already included Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, but the Sixers have had a lot of issues. Embiid has only played in 17 games, George has missed a third of the season and has not looked like himself in the games he has played, and Maxey has been asked to do too much. This situation has led to a lot of consternation among the fanbase so we could hear some jeers if the defending champion Boston Celtics take the Sixers to task on Thursday night.

This will be the third meeting between these Atlantic Division foes this season. Philadelphia went into Boston and knocked off the Celtics 118-114 on Christmas behind strong performances from Maxey and Caleb Martin. Boston bounced back on Groundhog Day by erasing a 26-point deficit to beat Philly 118-110 on the road. The Celtics outscored the 76ers 38-16 in the final quarter to pull out the win, and Jayson Tatum paced his team with 35 points, seven rebounds, and 11 assists.
Philadelphia 76ers vs. Boston Celtics SGP
Boston is sitting at 39-16 after the All-Star Break. Jayson Tatum has continued to play great after a fantastic 2023-24 campaign, averaging 27.0 PPG, 8.7 RPG, and 5.6 APG while making 45.5% of his field goals and 35.8% of his three-pointers. Tatum was one of the top performers in the All-Star Game, and he posted 30+ points in three straight Boston wins prior to the break.
However, NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown hasn’t been as sharp. Brown may just be feeling the effects of a long postseason coupled with participating in the Summer Olympics, but he hasn’t been as reliable of a shooter as he was during last year’s title runs. He made 49.9% of his field goals and 35.4% of his threes last season, but Brown is only making 46.1% of his shots and 32.4% of his treys this year. His assists are up, yet it’s clear the Celtics need him to be as efficient as he was last season if they hope to repeat.
The Celtics also need Kristaps Porzingis to stay healthy. Boston took a big risk trading for the oft-injured center prior to the start of last season, but that decision paid dividends after he managed to stay relatively healthy. Porzingis has only been able to play in about half of Boston’s games this season, yet he has been a superb shooter in those games. Currently, he is knocking down 40.5% of his threes, and that’s a career high.
Things are getting very dicey between Joel Embiid and Philadelphia fans. Embiid has only played in 450 total games since being the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and it’s clear that he just doesn’t put in the work that’s needed in the offseason. The talented center missed more than half of Philly’s games last year, and he has only played in 17 games so far this season. Embiid has seen his efficiency and scoring drop too, and he is averaging just 8.5 RPG in the games he has played.
Paul George has been a major disappointment too. George was supposed to give general manager Daryl Morey the third star he has always desired, yet the 15-year NBA veteran may be past his prime. He is averaging a scant 16.1 PPG while making 42.6% of his field goals and 36.3% of his threes. To make matters worse, George is just not getting to the free throw line and has struggled from the charity stripe when he has been able to draw fouls.
The situation in Philadelphia is quite toxic. If Boston jumps out to an early lead, the Boo Birds could come out in full force, so the Celtics have to be the bet here.
