Two of the top teams in the Big Ten will meet on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana when the Purdue Boilermakers play host to the Wisconsin Badgers. Purdue is no longer atop the conference standings after a 75-73 loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor on Tuesday night, while Wisconsin is currently in the middle of a three-game winning streak. The Boilermakers will no doubt be favored by the college basketball betting odds as the Badgers have yet to defeat any of the other top teams in the Big Ten this season.

Joe Lunardi currently has Purdue listed as a No. 2 seed, while Wisconsin is on the No. 4 line a week before March Madness. The Boilermakers are the highest-ranked team in the Big Ten according to Ken Pomeroy, and they have some solid wins to their credit. They knocked off Alabama and Ole Miss in November, and Purdue hammered Michigan at home by 27 points last month. However, they have yet to play most of the other top teams in the conference as tilts with Wisconsin, Michigan State, UCLA, and Illinois are still on the docket.
As for Wisconsin, Greg Gard has one of the best squads he has had over his ten years in Madison. This is the most efficient offense the Badgers have produced in a decade, and they are currently the best free throw shooting team in the country. Wisconsin is making an incredible 84.1% of its free throws with John Tonje leading the way. Tonje has sunk 144 out of 157 freebies (91.7%) as a senior.
Wisconsin Badgers at Purdue Boilermakers SGP
Purdue is led by three superstar players. Junior Trey Kaufman-Renn is the leading scorer on the Boilermakers with 19.0 PPG, and he is the sixth best player in the nation per Ken Pomeroy. Kaufman-Renn is making an incredible 60.2% of his field goals as a 6’9 forward taking over a lot of the scoring load from Zach Edey, and he also leads Purdue with 6.4 RPG.
Fellow junior Braden Smith has been the most important part of the offense. Smith leads the nation in assist rate, and he is averaging 8.6 APG for the Boilermakers. Additionally, he is averaging a career-high 16.4 PPG while making 45.3% of his field goals and 39.2% of his threes. This versatility has helped make Purdue a national title contender once again.
Finally, there is Fletcher Loyer. He is another junior that has spent all three seasons of his career in West Lafayette. Loyer is averaging 13.8 PPG and excels from beyond the three-point arc and at the charity stripe. His 45.1% three-point percentage and 85.5% free throw percentage are both tops on the team and place him among the national leaders in both categories.
The presence of these three juniors has led to Purdue being rated one of the most efficient offenses in the country. The Boilermakers rank 19th in effective field goal percentage, and they are in the top 35 in both two-point percentage and three-point percentage.
John Tonje is the best offensive weapon for Wisconsin. Tonje leads the Badgers with 18.6 PPG, and he is making over 40% of his treys in addition to being a superb free throw shooter. It’s been a long road to Madison for the sixth-year senior, but he is thriving despite the step up in competition.
Fifth-year senior Max Klesmit has shot more three-point attempts than anyone else on the team. Unfortunately for Wisconsin, Klesmit has been a dreadful perimeter shooter, making a scant 28.7% of his threes. That inaccuracy has kept this offense from really taking off as Klesmit gets plenty of good looks.
This isn’t a good matchup for Wisconsin. Purdue is great at Mackey Arena, and they should get plenty of extra possessions. The Boilermakers have a size advantage and are much better on the glass while the Badgers struggle to get second chances off missed shots. Wisconsin won’t get as many chances to knock down free throws here, leading to a comfortable victory for Purdue.
