Visions of a Subway Series are dancing in the heads of New York baseball fans. And while we have to wait until October to see if the New York Yankees and New York Mets will battle for the Commissioner’s Trophy, regular season bragging rights are up for grabs when the clubs meet Tuesday on TBS in the first of four meetings. The teams have co-existed in the Big Apple since the Metropolitans joined the NL in 1962, but it took 35 years for them to play their first regular season game. And the Yankees have dominated the overall series winning 76 of the 134 matchups and winning the 2000 World Series in five games. The Mets have closed the gap, though, winning five of the last seven meetings.

Odds Analysis
The Yankees have been the best team in baseball nearly all season and even a minor hiccup before the break didn’t affect them. They matched a season-high losing streak dropping a pair of games to the Red Sox and one to the Reds and lost five of six before closing the first half with a major explosion. It appeared that spell of losses just pissed them off since the Yanks spanked the Sox in the final two games of their weekend set before the All-Star break.
Those two games showed exactly why the Yankees are the best in MLB winning nearly 70 percent of their games. Baseball’s highest scoring offense totaled 27 runs and added to its league-leading total by smacking six home runs. Meanwhile the third-best staff in terms of ERA allowed just three runs to a Boston club averaging 4.6 runs. Aaron Judge is making a case to be highest paid play in baseball leading the offensive onslaught. He hit a pair of homers against the Sox giving him 33 before the break matching Mickey Mantle’s team record. The Yankees also cashed the OVER in five straight games and 10 of 11 right before the break.
The success of the Mets has sparked talk of World Series meeting. And they have to be excited about their position entering the second half. Playing the entire season without former Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom and most of the first half without Max Scherzer, the Mets led the NL East for 96 consecutive days leading into the break. And they were able to hold off the hard charging Braves taking two of three recently to delay any thoughts of a takeover.
The teams are built in similar fashion. The Mets boast a top staff with a 3.61 ERA and 1.18 WHIP getting only a handful of starts from Scherzer. And while they don’t hit as many homers, the Mets can score runs averaging 4.7 per game with a team batting average of .252. Their offseason additions have paid off with Starling Marte hitting .295 while playing stellar outfield defense. Pete Alonso failed to three-peat at the Home Run Derby but he’ll take his swings against the Yankees looking to add to his home run total that has him among the league leaders. And the Mets were one of the most profitable teams in baseball during the first half in the black $1205 on the moneyline, behind only the surprising Orioles in that department.
Probable Pitchers
There’s a very strong chance we see a matchup of aces in this game, though a funky schedule out of the break could force Aaron Boone to shake things up. A make-up doubleheader against Houston followed by a three-game series with the O’s is a tough way to start. But the Yanks have a day off ahead of this series and they don’t have to travel far, so that’s a plus. And we could see Gerrit Cole get the start. Cole tossed seven shutout innings in his last start before the break improving to 9-2 with a 3.02 ERA. Starters have been good but the bullpen has been better, a surprise after Aroldis Chapman imploded and lost his closer job. Relievers are 28-16 with 2.89 ERA while holding opponents to a .206 batting average.
The Mets have a pair of aces in their rotation and got one back recently when Scherzer returned from injury. He’s scheduled to pitch the first game out of the break leaving him available following an off day on Monday. However it’s more likely Buck Showalter goes with Chris Bassit or Carlos Carrasco instead since one of those guys is the odd man out in the weekend series. Both teams have dominant closers with bridge hurlers likely playing a big role. Relievers have surrendered 41 homers and that could be trouble against the Bombers.
Yankees at Mets MLB Odds Pick
The Mets have always been the red-headed step-child in New York with the fight for relevancy never ending. They are in the middle of a tight race while the Yankees are comfortably ahead in the AL East. While that might be a motivating factor, it’s still the battle for the Apple and the Bombers have a better all-around squad. And not facing Scherzer is icing on their cake.
