Lyoto Machida gets his long awaited title shot when he challenges UFC light-heavyweight champion “Sugar” Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 98 on May 23 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on pay-per-view.
Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson of Irvine became the No. 1 contender for Evans after he defeated Keith Jardine at UFC 96. Jackson, who will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair ligament damage in his jaw, will face the Evans-Machida winner at a date to be determined. Machida comes into this fight as a convincing -200 favorite, while Rashad Evans is listed as a +160 underdog.
A successful $100 wager on the champ would yield a total profit of $160, while a successful $200 wager on Machida would yield a total profit of $100.
In the UFC 98 co-feature, former UFC welterweight champions Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will finally meet in a highly-anticipated grudge match. This has been a feud years in the maing, one that escalated when Hughes and Serra were featured as rival coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter 6.”
These two fighters have a tremendous amount of bad blood between them. If you'll remember, Serra and Hughes were the two coaches on the sixth season of the "Ultimate Fighter". The two displayed a tremendous amount of disdain for each other during the course of the show, and this soon bubbled over into a mutual hatred.
The Matt Hughes and Matt Serra fight was originally supposed to happen at UFC 79 back in December of 2007, but an injury to Serra injured his back and he was forced to withdraw from the bout.
Also on the main card, Former lightweight champion Sean Sherk will battle Frankie Edgar. Both Edgar and Sherk are coming off of victories after losing their previous bouts. Sherk had lost his Lightweight title to BJ Penn before beating Tyson Griffin recently, while Edgar defeated Hermes Franca after losing to Gray Maynard.
Sherk (36-3-1), the former UFC lightweight champion was stripped of his title after testing positive for steroids following his win over Hermes Franca who also tested positive for steroids after the fight. After serving his suspension Sherk returned in an attempt to regain the title only to get stopped in the third round via TKO by the current title holder, B.J. Penn. Sherk recently got back on the winning track with a unanimous decision victory over Tyson Griffin in the “Fight of the Night” at UFC 90 in October. His next test in his attempt to get back in title contention will be against the four-time collegiate wrestling national qualifier Frank Edgar. Edgar (9-1) began his UFC career with three straight wins over Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek, and Spencer Fisher, but suffered his first career loss to Gray Maynard last April. He bounced back from the loss in July with a unanimous decision victory over former 155-pound challenger Hermes Franca.
As well, Yoshiyuki Yoshida will look to bounce back from his knockout loss to Josh Koscheck when he meets Brandon Wolff at 170 pounds. At 155, “The Ultimate Fighter” finalist Phillipe Nover will fight Kyle Bradley, and David Kaplan will tangle with George Roop.
In light heavyweight prelim action, James Irvin will fight Drew McFedries, and Houston Alexander will fight Andre Gusmao. Patrick Barry, a dangerous kickboxing crossover who easily chopped down Dan Evensen in December, will take on Tim Hague in a heavyweight bout.
UFC 98, beginning with the 10 p.m. ET pay-per-view (PPV) telecast. In addition, up-to-the-minute quick results of the under card action will begin to flow earlier around 8 p.m. ET on fight night.
