George St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn - One of the most anticipated UFC fights in the UFC history.
It’s the one everyone wants to see. With a win, either fighter will solidify their spot as one of the best MMA fighters of all time.
Now, nearly three years removed from their first meeting, the pair of top UFC fighters will meet again, but this time the welterweight championship will be on the line when they clash on January 31st in Las Vegas.
Georges St-Pierre Vs. BJ Penn II
Georges "Rush" St-Pierre has been on an impressive winning streak ever since he lost to Matt Serra in UFC 69. He took down Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra and recently had a unanimous decision over Jon Fitch in UFC 87 Seek and Destroy. Georges St-Pierre has an outstanding 17-2-0 MMA record and a 11-2 UFC record. He's 27 years old; weighs 170 lbs. and stands at 5'10". St-Pierre was born in and is fighting out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is a strong, very well rounded fighter with superb takedown ability with a
ground-n-pound style.
BJ “The Prodigy” Penn (14-4-1) will step in to face the man who beat him in a conversion decision victory in March 2006, George “Rush” St-Pierre. Penn will be making his first welterweight appearance in the UFC since 2006 when he lost to UFC legend Matt Hughes is attempting to recapture a title that he once held, become the first man to hold two championships at the same time, and get a little revenge for one of his losses. Penn has all the motivation in the world to win this match.
Georges St. Pierre is starting out as a -245 favorite, while B.J. Penn is a +175 underdog.
For those not entirely familiar with how betting lines work, this means that a successful $100 wager on B.J. Penn would make you $175 in profit. On the other hand, you would need to wager $245 on Georges St. Pierre to give yourself a chance at winning $100 of profit back. So obviously, GSP is quite a big favorite in this fight.
A lightweight bout between Nathan Diaz and Clay Guida rounds out the main card.
Lightweights Nate Diaz Vs. Clay Guida: Diaz and Guida were originally booked to fight this year but a foot injury suffered by Guida resulted in the matchup being pushed back to the UFC 94 main card.
Diaz, a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 5, captured the reality series’ lightweight tournament crown in mid-2007 with a victory over Manny Gamburyan. After winning his next three-straight fights over Junior Assuncao, Alvin Robinson, and Kurt Pellegrino all via submission, Diaz bested Josh Neer at UFC Fight Night 15 in September via split decision.
Also on the main card, No. 9-ranked welterweight Karo Parisyan will return to the Octagon for the first time since he was stopped by Thiago Alves last April. He will meet the “Stun Gun,” Dong Hyun Kim.
