Silva was originally supposed to face off against Yushin Okami but Okami broke his hand in training and Cote has been moved up into his spot.

Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote

Cote, (14-4) fighting out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is on a four fight win streak in the Octagon, beginning his string of excellence back in February of 2007 with a decision win over Scott Smith at UFC 67. Six months later, he TKO'd Kendall Grove in the first round at UFC 74, and followed that up with a first round TKO over and Drew McFedries at UFC Fight Night in January 2008. But it was his most recent victory, a pivotal win over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86 on July 5th that propelled him to number one contender status. Now Cote has the opportunity to join countryman Georges St-Pierre as a current Canadian UFC titleholder by taking out reigning champion Silva at UFC 90.

Silva, however, represents a significant step up in class. The Brazilian is 7-0 in the UFC, with only three of those fights reaching the second round. Anderson Silva is seen by many UFC fans, as the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter on the planet, a reputation he enhanced July 19 by dispatching light-heavyweight James (The Sandman) Irvin in 61 seconds in a bout contested at 205 pounds.

Tyson Griffin vs Sean Sherk

Rising 155-pound star Tyson Griffin will put his four fight winning streak on the line at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, when he squares off against his most accomplished foe to date, former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk, in a key matchup on the UFC 90 main card.

Griffin is coming off a strong performance against Marcus Aurelio at UFC 86 where he won by unanimous decision, raising his record to 5-1 in the UFC.

Sean Sherk is coming off a TKO loss to current UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn at UFC 84 after sitting out nearly a full year due to suspension. Sherk is looking to bounce back and assert himself at the top of the lightweight class.

Rich Clementi vs. Gray Maynard

Veteran fighter Rich Clementi has also been confirmed, in a fight against Gray Maynard at UFC 90. Clemeti has been on a tear of late winning his last six fights. He most recently defeated Terry Etim via unanimous decision at UFC 84.

Maynard, who is currently undefeated in MMA, was first brought to the spotlight on "TUF" season five. He most recently handed Frankie Edgar his first loss.

Shannon Gugerty vs. Spencer Fisher

As well, UFC newcomer Shannon Gugerty (11-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will replace Melvin Guillard (21-7-2 MMA, 4-3 UFC) in a scheduled bout with Spencer Fisher (21-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC) at UFC 90.

Fisher, a three-year veteran of the UFC, most recently defeated highly regarded lightweight prospect Jeremy Stephens at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale in June. The 32-year-old, a member of Iowa's famed Miletich Fighting Systems team, will go for his fifth win in his seven fights as he continues his long-running quest for a UFC title shot.

Gugerty, meanwhile, made his debut at July's UFC Fight Night event in Las Vegas, where he scored a first-round submission victory over the previously undefeated Dale Hartt. It was the 26-year-old's eighth straight victory all of which have come via stoppage five in the first round.

Gleison Tibau has had to pull out of his UFC 90 fight with Hermes Franca due to a shoulder injury. Tibau will be replaced by Marcus Aurelio, a longtime friend of Franca. Franca has a professional record of 18-7 and is currently on a 2-fight losing streak with decision losses to Sean Sherk and Frankie Edgar. Aurelio has a pro record of 16-6 and last competed in July at UFC 86 where he lost via decision to Tyson Griffin. UFC 90 will go down on October 25 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, just outside of Chicago.

SILVA vs. COTE RESULTS

Silva Claims TKO Victory Following Cote Injury

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva remained undefeated in the UFC on Saturday night, October 25th, defeating challenger Patrick Cote, though it was a finish nobody hoped for and no one saw coming.

The matchup headlined UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote” at the sold-out Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois just outside of Chicago.

After a close first round that saw Silva do the most damage with a kick to the head in the final minute, the fight went to the ground in the second. Though Silva again did more damage Cote challenged Silva and went toe-to-toe with him on the feet.

But in the third round, Cote, who became the first fighter to make it past two rounds with Silva in the UFC, suffered a fight ending knee injury just 39-seconds into the frame and the bout was immediately halted, awarding the TKO victory to Silva.
