UFC 73 "STACKED"
Date: July 7, 2007
Location: Sacramento, Calif.
Venue: ARCO Arena
Broadcast: Pay-Per-View
UFC 73 is one of the best UFC fight cards this year. It’s going to deliver the one-two punch fight fans want to bet on. It has Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans, two all-state college wrestlers, both who dislike each other, settling their differences in the Octagon, as well as title defenses by two champions Anderson Silva and Sean Sherk. UFC 73, loaded with UFC superstars, takes place LIVE from ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. Saturday, July 7, 2007.
There will be many great fights and two title defenses. Miiddleweight champion Anderson Silva and lightweight champion Sean Sherk, who both won their titles at UFC 64, will defend their titles against former King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt and former WEC champion Hermes Franca, respectively. Also the man people love to hate Tito Ortiz will be fighting The Ultimate Fighter 2 heavyweight winner Rashad Evans in a light heavyweight match. Here is the announced fight card.
Silva is a Brazillian who has competed in Cage Rage, PRIDE, Shooto, and Rumble on the Rock. He has beaten some of the biggest names in the business including Rich Franklin and Jeremy Horn. His record stands at 18-4 with 10 knockouts and 3 submissions after his triangle choke win over Travis Lutter on Feb. 3rd at UFC 67.
Sherk has done almost everything he can in mixed martial arts fighting. His record is 33-2 with wins in both UFC and PRIDE.
His style has drawn comparasions to former welterweight champ Matth Hughes, whom Sherk fought to a close decision loss for a title. Sherk has eight knockouts and thirteen submissions to his credit, but hasn't fought since winning the title over Kenny Florian back in October at UFC 64.
Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz stated, “Everybody should expect fireworks. Rashad is standing in the way of my getting another title shot and my prediction is that he won’t be able to handle my tempo or the 18,000 Tito Ortiz fans that are in Sacramento to see me win.
Evans countered, “Tito needs to learn the meaning of respect. On July 7, I’m going to teach him what that’s all about. Let him come down from the mountain to Greg Jackson’s training camp and he’ll see what he’s up against. I’m focused and on a mission, and my goal is to knock him out.

UFC 73 "STACKED" Results
UFC 73 was by far the most anticipated MMA event of the year with 9 fights on the card, 2 of which were title fights in the Middleweight and Lightweight divisions. The night started off with sparks when Heath Herring a huge underdog nearly knocked out Pride Fighting champ Minotauro Nogueira with a kick to the head, but ended up losing the fight by decision. The Lighweight championship was nothing short of an all out war between Hermes Franca and defending champ Sean Sherk. The bout went all 5 five minute rounds and ended with Sherk by unanimous decision. One of the more anticipated fights of the night was between Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz at the Lightheavy Weight division. Sparks were flying and both fighters put on quite a show for the sell out crowd at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, but the crowd was left disappointed when the bout ended in a draw due to a point deduction incurred by Ortiz in the 2nd round when he was penalized for holding onto the fence to prevent a takedown. The main event of the night was the Middleweight championship bout between defending champ Anderson "The Spider" Silva and the challenger Nate Marqaurdt. With the ring of the bell Silva opened up with a quick flurry of striking combos, Marquardt tried to defend but was no match for the Brazilians speed and Nate "The Great" was TKO'd with 1:30 left in the 1st round.
