Date: Oct 24, 2009
Location: Los Angeles, Calif.
Venue: Staples Center
Broadcast: Pay per view

Light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida will defend his title against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the pay-per-view headliner, while a heavyweight matchup between Cain Velasquez and Ben Rothwell will also face off in the octagon.

The elusive champ will look to extend his professional MMA record to a perfect 16-0 in his first-ever title defense. Machida is known for his elusive Shotokan karate style and has fought a who’s who of top fighters. He is one of the least-damaged fighters in mixed martial arts history and has yet to lose a round or even be knocked down by an opponent in 15 fights.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (18-3) is known for his aggression. The Muay Thai stylist has earned a very impressive 15 of his 18 victories by way of (T)KO.

In “Shogun” last ufc fights, he had a TKO victory over UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman at UFC 93 and a devastating first-round TKO over another Hall of Famer, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell at UFC 97, Rua has positioned himself as the No. 1 contender for the UFC light heavyweight title. At only 27 years old, “Shogun” has already compiled an 18-3 professional record, including wins over former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Kevin Randleman and Ricardo Arona.

Former IFL and Affliction heavyweight standout Ben Rothwell Will Face off with Cain Velasquez.

Rothwell is coming off a dominating technical knockout win over Chris Guillen at Adrenaline II back in Dec. 2008. Prior to that, “Big” was riding a career high 13-fight win streak before running into former UFC heavyweight champion, Andrei Arlovski, during the inaugural Affliction event in July 2008. Before the loss, he had defeated former UFC champion Ricco Rodriguez, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 standout Krzysztof Soszynski, Roy “Big Country” Nelson and others.

Velasquez is coming off the complete and utter destruction of Cheick Kongo at UFC 99, winning a unanimous decision by escaping the Frenchman's pinpoint striking to dominate the fight on the ground. The talented wrestler out of American Kickboxing Academy pushed his perfect record to 6-0 in his first decision win after rattling off five straight technical knockout stoppages.

Gleison Tibau (17-7) vs. Josh Neer (25-8-1)

Neer looks to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Kurt Pellegrino in August at UFC 101. “The Dentist” hasn’t suffered back-to-back losses in the UFC since consecutive defeats to Nick Diaz and Josh Burkman in 2006 led to a seven-fight run outside of the organization.

Tibau also looks to rebound from a loss. The Brazilian suffered a much-debated split-decision defeat to Melvin Guillard at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale in June. According to the Sherdog report, Sherk suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him from training for approximately four weeks.
