Date: Saturday, August 8, 2009
Venue: Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Penn
Broadcast: Live on PPV at 10:00 p.m. E.T

UFC 101 - light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (16-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) vs. Anderson Silva (24-4 MMA, 9-0 UFC) match-up and Penn returns to action for the first time since his fourth-round TKO loss to Georges St. Pierre in January. BJ Penn now will defend his UFC lightweight crown for the second time against number one contender Kenny Florian. Penn’s last fight at lightweight was against Sean Sherk at UFC 84 last May. Since his return to the UFC, Penn is undefeated at lightweight, having beaten Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson, and Sherk.

Florian, meanwhile, goes for his seventh straight win since losing a bid for the vacant title in 2006. Florian suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Sherk in the fight, but he's since posted six consecutive wins (all but one via stoppage) over the likes of Joe Lauzon, Roger Huerta and Joe Stevenson to emerge as the division's top contender.

Penn is a -200 to +150 favorite over Florian, and Penn is so flexible and seasoned on the ground that getting submitted by anyone in the division is unlikely.

In addition to Penn vs. Florian, "Declaration" features a co-main event between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin. The non-title fight takes place at 205 pounds and marks Silva's first fight in the division in 13 months.

Silva is a -300 to +200 favorite over Griffin, but that’s not to say “The Spider” isn’t in danger in this one.

Griffin could have a big size advantage in the fight because he walks around at abouot 230 pounds and will probably outweigh Silva by a significatn amount come fight night.

Silva owns the longest consecutive win streak in UFC history at nine, also the UFC Middleweight Champion (24-4) has tied the UFC record for most consecutive successful title defenses at five, beating the likes of Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Patrick Cote, and Thales Leites along the way. The 34-year old native of Curitiba, Brazil is not satisfied yet, so he is moving up to the light heavyweight division once again.

Silva made his reputation in the UFC by roaring through competition, knocking out most of his foes violently. He destroyed Rich Franklin twice and also knocked out Nate Marquardt and submitted Dan Henderson.
