The Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 is the first of two stock car races held at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule in mid-June, the second being the Pennsylvania 500, usually held in July. Since opening its gates to NASCAR in 1974, Pocono has played host to a number of different races. The Pocono 500 replaced a 400-mile race at Texas World Speedway on NASCAR's schedule beginning with the 1982 season. It was moved to the former USAC Marlboro Championship Trail date in June, displacing the Indy cars to August.
Since 1997, however, it has limited itself to 2 races. This Nascar race is important for drivers trying to earn valuable Cup points. It will start at 1 p.m. EST on June 6, 2010. The race will be televised on TNT and will also be broadcast on MRN radio at 12 p.m.
Pocono's funky design, with three different turns and three different lengths of straights, offers one heck of a test for even the most seasoned of racing veterans. The track is shaped like a triangle and super-speedway is 2.5-mile long. It has three varying kinds of turns for drivers to tackle, with corners banked anywhere from 6 to 14 degrees. Since the course is neither an oval nor a road course, drivers generally refer to it as a 'roval'. Pocono Raceway has a massive 3,055-foot front straight that often sees cars going four, five and six wide before they funnel down into turn one. And with the longest straightaway on the schedule, the Pocono 500 is sure to bring plenty of lead changes. Put all of those things together and you’ve got Pocono Raceway, a track that has challenged NASCAR’s best since the first Cup race there in 1974.

Denny Hamlin dominated Pocono in 2006, winning the pole and the race both times at Pocono as a rookie. In 2007, Jeff Gordon was the only driver to finish in the top five both times, winning in June. Kasey Kahne won the 2008 version of the Pocono 500.
2010 Pocono Raceway Winner
In what's otherwise becoming the summer of loathe among Sprint Cup Series drivers, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch played nice with each other in Sunday's Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500.
And even if the Joe Gibbs Racing teammates were beefing as they were a couple of weeks ago, Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota Camry quashed it by being quicker than Busch's No. 18, especially during a green-white-checkered-flag finish brought on by stablemate Joey Logano's latest run-in with Kevin Harvick on the next-to-last lap of regulation.
Hamlin didn't want to see that caution but it didn't matter, as his strong restart put room between him and Busch and helped establish another mini-streak at Pocono Raceway.
2009 Pocono Raceway Winner
The talk all weekend was how the new double-file restarts with the leaders up front would change strategy for Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway.
In the end it was an old, familiar strategy that determined the outcome.
And it was an old, familiar face back in Victory Lane.
Tony Stewart won the battle of fuel mileage, and in doing so won his first points race as an owner/driver for Stewart-Haas Racing. The emotion he felt overshadowed any excitement the double-file restarts may have produced for fans seemingly starving for something more.
There was almost disbelief in Stewart's voice as he crossed the finish line.
