Sprint All Star Challenge
Lowes Motor Speedway Charlotte - May 16, 2009
Sprint All Star Race brings every single impact driver on the NASCAR circuit, for an all out war. The race is AWSOME — just take every NASCAR driver who has won a race over the last two years, combine them with the winners of The Cup for the last decade, throw in the top qualifiers from the Sprint Showdown, and put them all together on the track of Lowes Motor Speedway, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a show.
Once agian the NASCAR Organization has changed the format for the All-Star Sprint Race,
May's edition of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series non-points all-star event is getting a new format or one of it old formats back.
Gone is the format from last season featuring four 25-lap segments, though the race will still feature a total of 100 laps. Instead, the 2009 version of the Sprint All-Star Race will be broken into four segments, one 50 lapper, two 20 lappers and a concluding segment of 10 laps.
The 2009 format is as follows:
Segment 1: 50 laps with a mandatory green-flag pit stop on Lap 25 at which time teams must pit and take on four tires. Following the end of Segment 1, the caution flag will be displayed for an optional pit stop.
Segment 2: 20 laps with the caution flag displayed at the end of Segment 2 for an optional pit stop.
Segment 3: 20 laps with a 10-minute break at the end of Segment 3. Teams may make normal adjustments to their cars during this break. The finishing order after the third segment determines the final starting positions for the fourth and final segment.
Segment 4: 10-lap shootout with only green-flag laps counting.

The celebration everyone knew was coming arrived Saturday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway against a background of exploding fireworks.
The real pyrotechnics, however, were reserved for the race track.
Tony Stewart passed Matt Kenseth through Turn 2 on Lap 99 of 100 to win the Sprint All-Star Race, his first victory in the annual non-points event and his first as an owner/driver.
Stewart did what he had threatened to do since the beginning of the season. He had parlayed five top-five finishes in the past six races into a second place in the Sprint Cup Series standings, but victory had eluded the driver nicknamed "Smoke" -- until Saturday nigh.
Stewart, who led only the final two laps, streaked across the finish line .971 seconds ahead of Kenseth and pocketed the winner's share of $1,058,656.
