Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez Odds

Sign Up Click HereMayweather, who is coming out of a brief retirement, damaged cartilage in his ribs during training and had to be had rescheduled for September 19, 2009. Marquez, who has also agreed to fight on the new date, is excited about appearing yet again on the time-honored tradition of El Grito de Independence. The two fighters were committed to rescheduling the fight, even though more lucrative opponents like Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao became available for both of them.

Mayweather Jr. has always been more slippery on defense than astroglide but after 18 months removed from the ring Floyd may have lost a half-step. A rib cartlage injury is excruciatingly painful and takes a while to recover from adding to Mayweather's ring rust.

Mayweather officially ended his retirement on May 2 when he announced he would fight Marquez. They were scheduled to fight at a catch-weight of 144 pounds, more than Marquez has ever fought and the lightest weight for Mayweather since 2005.

Mayweather hasn't boxed since knocking out Ricky Hatton in December 2007. The former five-division champ was slated to fight a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya but instead abruptly retired last June, turning his attention to show business.

As of now, the plan is to reschedule the fight as soon as possible and not to cancel the fight entirely or to have either man move onto another opponent.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) vs. Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs)

The retired undisputed six-time world champion in five weight divisions Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his come back in the world of boxing and tries to claim his crown as the king of the ring. Mayweather will start his come back by an opening fight on July 18 against the five-time world champion in three divisions Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez at MGM Grand in Las Vegas where they will be fighting a catch weight of 145 lbs.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. stands at 5'8" while Juan Manuel Marquez is 5'7". There's just an inch that separates the two and when it comes to styles, they are both defensive fighters as Juan Manuel Marquez is known to be the best counter puncher in his division and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a solid defense as well, with his shoulder rolls and great footwork.

They can both pack a punch, but we have yet to see if Marquez can carry his power up to welterweight. Marquez has recently knocked out Casamayor and Diaz, while Mayweather put down Hatton in his last fight.

For these two future Hall of Famers, all that really matters is what happens when the bell rings and with Mayweather's return to the ring in a quest to reclaim his pound-for-pound title by taking on Marquez, a man looking to add once again to his amazing legacy, this is a true mega-fight which will determine who is the premier boxer of this era.

Mayweather has won six championship belts in five different weight classes and he is the former WBC welterweight champion.

Las Vegas odds on the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight at the MGM Grand Arena have been released and to no surprise, Mayweather is a -420 favorite, while Marquez is a +420 underdog.

Mayweather vs Juan Marquez Results

Mayweather put on a pure boxing clinic, pasting Juan Manuel Marquez in as comprehensive a performance as you will ever see in a unanimous decision victory before 13,116 (mostly Marquez fans on Mexican Independence Day weekend) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

There wasn't one minute of true competition in the fight, as Mayweather simply ran roughshod over the smaller man.

"I've been off for two years so I felt like it took me a couple rounds to really know I was back in the ring again," he said. "And I know I'll get better."

That's the scary part. But the frustrating part was he missed a golden opportunity to close the show in style.

He left Marquez's face a swollen mess. Gave him a bloody nose, too. Oh, and he also deposited him on the canvas in the second round after landing a hybrid left hook/uppercut on Marquez's chin.

"I dropped him with a punch I don't think he saw and when he got back up, he kept on fighting," said Mayweather.

And Marquez said, "It was a very hard fight. He surprised me with the knockdown. He hurt me in that round, but not at any other time."

Yet for all of Mayweather's dominance, you never got the impression that he wanted to step on the gas and get Marquez out of there.
