Belmont is the third and final leg of the prestigious Triple Crown Race for top 3-year-old thoroughbreds in America, it is horse racing event that is almost celebrated as much in New York as the Derby is in Louisville and the Preakness in Baltimore. The Belmont Stakes has been an extremely historic race when the Triple Crown has been on the line. Horse bettors and Triple crown horse racing fans have their interest piqued by any race that can mean so much. This is a race where legends are born and history is made.
The Belmont Stakes is a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old colts and geldings carrying a weight of 126 pounds (57 kg) and for fillies with a weight of 121 pounds (55 kg). The Belmont Stakes is also known as the "Run for the Carnations" because of the blanket of white carnations thrown over the winner's neck.
The Belmont Stakes will be the 11th race and go to post at approximately 6:35 p.m. Also on the card will be the $400,000 Manhattan Handicap (Gr. 1), the $200,000 True North (Gr. 2), the $250,000 Woody Stephens Breeders' Cup (Gr. 2), the $300,000 Just A Game (Gr. 2) and the $250,000 Acorn (Gr. 1). The Belmont Stakes was first run on June 19, 1867, at the Jerome Park race course, an oddly shaped, English-style track that required the Jockeys and horses to run three turns instead of two because of a dip in the middle of the backstretch.
A filly named “Ruthless” won the first Belmont's $1,850 winners purse, outlasting DeCourcey by a head. The race has been run every since, with the exception of 1911 and '12, and the Belmont has established itself as the ultimate test of championship stamina in this country. Its 1-1/2-mile distance now has become a rarity in American dirt races.
 The Belmont was even longer in its early days at 1-5/8 miles through 1873. But from 1890 through 1926, the race dropped down to distances varying between 1-1/8 and 1-3/8 miles. The 1926 Belmont was run at 1-1/2 miles and was won by Crusader, a son of the legendary Man o' War, in a time of 2:32-1/5.
The race has been run at that distance ever since.
Belmont Park is the home of the 139th Running of the Belmont Stakes on June 9, 2007.

across and 14 inches at the base. Atop the cover is a silver figure of Fenian, winner of the third running of the Belmont Stakes in 1869. The bowl is supported by three horses representing the three foundation thoroughbreds Eclipse, Herod and Matchem. The trophy, a solid silver bowl originally crafted by Tiffany's, was presented by the Belmont family as a perpetual award for the Belmont Stakes in 1926. It was the trophy August Belmont's Fenian won in 1869 and had remained with the Belmont family since that time. The winning owner is given the option of keeping the trophy for the year their horse reigns as Belmont champion. |

 Jockey Kent Desormeaux, who finished second twice before at the Belmont Stakes, wins the 2009 Belmont Stakes riding Summer Bird. The other bird, Mine That Bird, hung back for most of the race and then made an early move — maybe a bit too early — to push for the lead but ended up taking third place and still in the money. Dunkirk finished in second place.
"He was fighting it just a little bit, " jockey Calvin Borel said on Mine That Bird. "I didn't want to fight him too much."
Summer Bird, the 11/1 odds to win the 2009 Belmont Stakes, becomes the surprise winner of the Belmont Stakes and denies jockey Calvin Borel his own 'Triple Crown.'
"I had an armchair ride until I found some room. said winning jockey Kent Desormeaux "Well, I found some room."
Bred by owners Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman out of the mare Hong Kong Squall and a daughter of 1990 Preakness winner Summer Squall, Summer Bird has raced only four times in his entire career.
